Boeing’s 787 is a series of widebody airframes produced by the Chicago-based manufacturer with three variants of the series currently certified. Described during its development as being “a new super-efficient, midsized airplane.
The Being 787-8 was the first to enter service in 2011, after being certified earlier the same year.
The next variant of the 787 series to be developed was the -9, with Air New Zealand serving as that variant’s launch customer. It first flew in September, 2013.
The Boeing 787-10 variant was launched on June 18, 2013, at the Paris Air Show. the first flight of the Boeing 787-10 took place in March, 2017. Singapore Airlines subsequently received the first -10 airframe, in March, 2018.
Described as being “designed for medium-to-long haul flights,” Boeing also promotes the 787’s ability to enable new non-stop flights, with the number of “new point-to-point routes” made possible by the 787 since the -8 entered service numbering over 200.
According to Boeing, it is the type’s “fuel efficiency and range flexibility” that allow airlines to begin such routes, while the primary competition for the 787 is Airbus’ A330neo series of airframes.
